We had 12 3/4 tables for this regular Friday shuffle-deal-and-play duplicate
on the July 4th holiday. Your director filled in the movement to bring it
to a full 13 tables. In hopes of producing a faster game, I chose to play
eight 3-board rounds of 20 minutes each instead of the slower twelve 2-board
rounds at a nominal 15 minutes each. But to do this, we had to have another
set of boards in play, and not having any boards numbered 37-39, I chose to
simply use the golden colored boards 7, 8, and 9. Visually, this made it
fairly clear what was happening, but I erred in not inserting boards which
matched the dealer and vulnerability of real boards 37-39. (In retrospect,
the right plan was to use boards 5-7 from another set with tape indicating
that today they were 37-39.) ACBLscore insisted on believing we were using
the real 37-39 and required that the scores match the vulnerability for
those boards. This luckily proved to be no problem for boards 37 and 38,
but on board 39 a serious difficulty ensued, which Saul cleverly finessed.
**** On Board 39, whenever N-S were down 1, their correct score of -50 was
deemed an illegal score and not permitted by ACBLscore which believed N-S
were vulnerable on that board. To preserve relative position and correct
matchpoint comparisons, all scores of down 1 became -100, and those that
went down 2 got -200 instead of -100. So the scores look wrong, but the
matchpoints are correct.
As several players pointed out, 13 tables is ideal for a twelve round
2-boards-per-round movement, and I knew this, but I'd never tried a 39-board
event and wanted to see if I could pull it off. Apologies for the small
confusions that occurred, but we did finish more promptly.
I corrected a couple minor scoring errors at the club, and I have ignored
a couple e-mails that were sure they had been cheated on Board 39 when they
looked at the Preliminary Recap. My own complete rechecking found three
further errors:
Board 1 NS 7 v EW 13 -50 not -500 fumblefingers
Board 38 NS 8 v EW 3 +1020 not +940 not sure why
NS 9 v EW 5 +1020 not +940
These corrections did not change the rankings at the top of either direction.
Congratulations to Kathy Benjamin and Bill Hunter for the best score in the
room at a robust 71%, winning N-S by about a full three boards over Sham Dandekar
and Stanley Chasan. E-W was closer, with Frank Lombardo and Fred Landman nosing
out Amnon and Sheila Gabay by half a board (3.5 MP).
With only one section, I award Free Plays to only two pairs, the section tops.
We had one unpleasant and unnecessarily noisy dispute that had to be resolved
after the game was over. Declarer claimed that his RHO had revoked, but RHO
disputed this, and by the time I was called to the table, it appeared that
the accused revoker had disturbed the order of the quitted tricks in front of
him. The correct procedure is to IMMEDIATELY CALL THE DIRECTOR if a claim of
an established revoke is disputed and for all players to refrain from touching
their cards until the director arrives. At the end of the session, we laboriously
reconstructed the entire play and I ruled that the disputed revoke had indeed
occurred, but even after the 2-trick penalty the revoking side had a good score.
I need a break, and have chosen to take next Friday off. Joyce Pearson will be
