We had 13 1/2 tables for today's NAOP game. It looked like 14 tables until we had
a no-show, so the game was structured as a 14-table game with a phantom Pair 13 EW.
Most N-S had a 2-board sit out. We played 12 rounds, so top on each board is 11.
One minor error was reported and fixed at the club with no effect on matchpoints.
My complete rechecking found one more error:
Board 18 NS 13 v EW 2 +50 not +90 misread the handwriting on first try
The pairs affected gained or lost about one MP, and this did not create any changes
to the rankings.
Congratulations to Nancy Perkins and Bohkee Yap for the best score in the room at
over 62% and about half a board ahead of Nataly Goldin and Yonathan Bard who were
second overall, another half board ahead of Bert Winer and Stan Richmond in 3rd.
With one section, I only award only two Free Plays, to the section tops.
These NAOP games offer generous awards, half red points and half black. There will
be one more NAOP game at our club this summer, on Friday August 29th, and it will
be called the Last Chance To Qualify Game. Anyone who has somehow failed to qualify
for the District NAOP finals in Sturbridge in October, will have this one more chance.
Pairs who play too slowly make the game unpleasant for everyone else in the room,
and today we had the most egregious example of slow play in my memory. I can adopt
an even tougher policy by giving Slow Play warnings to pairs who finish late, and
those pairs will be prevented from running into overtime on the next round. Yes,
I can and will stop play in the middle of a board and insist that pairs move along
to the next table. In such extreme cases, I can even award a ZERO score instead
of an average minus. As a simple matter of kindness and respect for the other
players, please work hard at keeping up.
I leave on a much-needed vacation this Wednesday and will not return until September 1st.
