Minor Correction: The Limited A Free Play was won by Robert McCaw and Lew Gamerman, not
by Natalie and Arkady. Lew and Bob were above 62% and 9 MP ahead of Natalie and Arkady.

We had an overflow crowd of 24 1/2 tables for this Tuesday evening Club Championship,
which used pre-dealt hands and provided printed hand records after the game. It looked
like it would be a perfect 24-table game which easily divides into two 12-table sections
but when a late-arriving pair created another half table, we went to a bumping movement.
Since nobody wants to be bumped, two coin flips are used to determine which section and
which direction will absorb the extra pair. Tonight it was E-W in Section B, so most
of those E-W pairs had a 3-board sit-out. All results were compared across both
sections, so top on each board is 15.
As an aside, the problem gets really hairy when we end up with exactly 25 tables.
There are several possible solutions, each with some difficulties:
1) play two 12 1/2 table sections with three boards per round and a bumping pair in
each section, but this makes for lots of sit-outs,
1A) a clever variation would have a 25th table where the two pairs that are sitting
out (from opposite sections) play each other, but ACBLscore would have no clue about
how to score this game!,
2) play a 12-table and a 13-table section, both with 3 boards per round, but this
involves creating boards 37-39 in one section by shuffling since no hand records for
those additional boards exist,
3) play a 12-table section with 3 boards per round and a 13-table section with two
boards per round, but now boards 27-36 do not get played in both sections and the
rounds have to be called at different times, and scoring across the field won't work,
4) play a 12-table and a 13-table section both as twelve rounds of 2 boards per round
with 26 boards in play in each section and a bye stand in the 12-table section,
5) play a 12-table section with relay and bye stand only playing 24 boards, while
the 13-table section plays 26 boards, with imperfect scoring across the field, OR
6) play THREE sections of 9, 8, and 8 boards, all of which play 24 boards, but the
two 8-board sections need a relay and bye-stand, and your director is not going to
always pre-deal three complete sets of boards on the off-chance of getting this large
a crowd, and first round duplication to provide for the 3rd section would introduce
delays.
As our Tuesday night games seem to peak at this season, I'd like to be ready to deal
with this ugly 25-table case, and if you have followed this discussion and have some
ideas or want to express your preferences, please talk with the directors.
No scoring errors were reported at the club, but one was reported by e-mail from
Howard Canan, and that same error was verified during my recheck (which found no
other errors):
Section A. Board 21 NS 12 v EW 4 600 not -600 I typed it wrong from pick-up slip
This correction cost Howard and Jane more than half a board and dropped them down a
couple notches in the Flight C overall standings.
Congratulations to Natalie Bassil and Joe DeGaetano for the best score in the event,
at over 62%, but only 1.09 MP ahead of Bob McCaw and Lew Gamerman who were second. The
top six scores were within 10 MP of the top in a very competitive game.
With two sections, I award Free Plays to four pairs within groups as follows:
1. Natalie and Joe for First Overall at 62.78%,
2. Neal Gore and Stephen Karp for first among Flight C (0-500 MP) at 55.19%, almost
a full board ahead of Chris Dwyer and Lee Engler,
3. the Reed brothers (James and Homer) for first amont Flight B (500-1500 MP) at 57.09%,
about 5 1/2 MP ahead of Tony Keats and Barbara Glazerman, and
4. Nataly Goldin and Arkady Shifrin for first among Limited A (1500-3000 MP) at an even
60%, less than 8 MP ahead of Cleve and Sally Peeke.
We have a regular Tuesday evening game next week, but then Rosh Hashana and various other
Jewish holidays prevent us from playing at Temple Reyim. The Tuesday night games on
September 30th, October 14th, and October 21st will all instead happen at the Westwood
Bridge Club. The schedule for Q4 has now been published and you may want to pick up a
copy the next time you come to the club.
