We had 18 full tables for this Friday morning Club Championship, with pre-dealt hands
and hand records. The two 9-table sections were scored across the field, so top on
each board is 15.
The excitement of this session was an extremely close finish, with the top four pairs
separated by a mere two MP. When things are this close, a scoring change anywhere in
the room can upset the leader board.
At the end of the game, one table had lagged far behind and was still playing their
final board when all the other scores had been entered into the computer. In order
to get scores out, I temporarily assigned a NoPlay for that board (after threatening
the slow table with Av- to both pairs if they didn't get their result in soon!) and
then published a "near final" set of results. On that listing, Pat Hanna and Peter
Matthews were ahead by .04% over Dave Green and Len Aberbach. But then that last
score came in from two pairs neither of whom was in contention, and the lead changed
hands with Dave and Len now ahead of Pat and Peter by 0.01% (0.07 MP). That is not
the end of the story, as my rechecking found two more scoring errors...
No scoring problems were reported at the club, or by e-mail, but my complete audit
found two errors:
Section B. Board 5 NS 6 v EW 1 100 not 110 handwriting fooled me first pass
Board 16 NS 4 v EW 2 -680 not -650 again misread handwriting
None of the four pairs involved in these corrections were in contention, but these
changes tend to affect some other pairs by 1/2 MP. Sure enough, Dave and Len lost
1/2 MP, and now Patricia and Peter are the winners by a huge 0.12% (0.43 MP).

1. Patricia Hanna and Peter Matthews for First Overall, at 62.48%, winning 3.03 masterpoints
2. Christina Parker and Stewart Rubenstein for First among Flight C players (0-500 MP)
at 62.19%, more than two full boards ahead of Lena Russo and John Goldman,
3. Robert Loycano and Michelle Blanchard for First among Flight B players (500-1500 MP),
at 58.26%, only 5 MP ahead of Marilyn Zanger and Ron Agel, and
4. David Green and Len Aberbach for First among Limited A players (1500-3000 MP),
at 62.36%, more than 20 MP ahead of Sally Peeke and Marilyn Wolman.
People often ask me if the computer algorithms which deal the cards are completely
random. The answer is an emphatic YES! The deals are created by Dealmaster Pro, which
does have settings for constraining the deals in various ways (and this is useful for
teachers providing hands to illustrate some point), but all the deals used at this club
are created using the "Completely Random" setting. This will lead to some unpleasant
anomolies, such as a session with N/S (or E/W) getting a vast majority of the HCP.
Today's hands were unusual in that no slams were bid, but these things even out
and the next set my be full of slam-going hands. I used to get complaints from people
who were convinced that shuffled deals were somehow more fair, and they hated computer
hands. I now think most of these people hated the process and delay of having to
duplicate boards before the first round. People do like having hand records available
after the game, and now that dealing machines are available, the club can offer this
service at every session (at some additional cost -- monetary and time -- to the
director).
Next Friday we have an EMBA Unit Game, again with extra masterpoints and pre-dealt hands.
